 News and Updates

This years weather is disappointing to club members and snowmobilers in this area to say the least. The frustration continues to grow as the weeks go on. With this in mind we would like to take a moment to help bring some understanding to the topics of Registrations and Club Memberships.

Each year snowmobilers across the state join local clubs, and register their snowmobiles with the DMV. The fees for both of these are then used towards many functions and costs associated with having trails in the state. The first $10 or your registration in retained directly be the DMV for administrative costs. The rest is then collectively pooled, and later distributed to the clubs in 2 seperate disbursements. The amount of this disbursement is determined by the number of snowmobiles registered by November 31, how many miles of club trails are recognized/funded by the state(not all trails are approved for funding), and also based on annual snowfall in the clubs area. This amount must then be justified by the clubs by tracking costs of signs, VOLUNTEER hours of work on the trails, stakes, groomer costs including fuel, and many other costs associated with maintaining trails. Not all items used by the club qualify for this reimbursement, this money comes from club memberships. Club memberships also help pay for things such as Insurance on our grooming equipment, maintenance and repairs on the groomers, groomer fuel and much more.
Many of these costs are incurred long before the first snowflake falls. Many volunteers work many hours and days to install and remove trail signs that can not be left in place over the off season, they cut back trees and brush, move hazardous objects from the trails, build bridges and culverts to make crossing certain areas safer and more convenient, pound hundreds of stakes into the ground for signs, snow fence and roped off areas. Many landowners require that we keep trails narrow, or rope off certain areas that they do not want machines on in order for us to receive their signed permission slips to ride. Many hours are spent maintaining relationships with landowners, and collecting the necessary permission slips EACH YEAR. Many more hours are spent by volunteers to staff fundraising events the club holds to help earn the money that is needed each year to close the gap between what the state reimbursements are and what the actual costs of keeping our trails and equipment. It take a LOT of volunteer hours to take the raffle trailer around to local shows to sell tickets, to host and teach the safety classes, to cook-assemble-and deliver Chicken dinners to local landowners as a token of snowmobilers appreciation for riding on their land, to deal with angry landowners and townships when riders DON'T stay on the trails, and to do all of that and more to KEEP ACCESS to and MAINTAIN safety and accessiblity to the trails.
WITH THAT IN MIND: Clubs and their volunteers do this year after year without the slightest promise of snow, or of even riding their own snowmobiles. Not a promise of a full season, or even as many hours of riding as there were spent working. Our groomer payments are due EVERY year regardless of how many people join the club or register their sleds. Insurance payments and other liabilities are blind to whether we get snow to ride on each season. Clubs have this equipment, and committments regardless of weather, and regardless of how much money the state helps out with.
Without the funding from memberships and registrations each year, clubs won't have the equipment, the resources, OR the volunteers needed to have snowmobile trails. If you decide to hold off on memberships and registrations - you will only ensure that trails in NY will cease to exist!

If you are a member, but have not been receiving club emails or updates, please make sure to contact us to be added to the mailing list.
